Contemporary West Coast Tapestry 2000
Contemporary West Coast
Tapestry 2000 showcases the work of twenty five artists living between Alaska
and California. Juried by Rebecca Stevens, Consulting Curator of Contemporary
Textiles at The Textile Museum in Washington D.C., the 38 hand-woven tapestries,
which range from highly patterned abstractions to illusionistic imagery, reflect
the diversity that characterizes art at the turn of the twenty first century.
Tapestry is a medium that
requires great versatility. The artist must be capable of creative and skillful
design work and must also be trained in the woven techniques associated with
tapestry. Successful tapestries reflect not only the originality and quality of
the design, but also the artist’s skill in translating that design into the
woven language. The tapestries in Contemporary West Coast Tapestry 2000 point to
the vitality and innovation present in the field today.
